ICN Launches New Alliance

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to empower student and early career nurses. This new body, the ICN Alliance of Student and Early Career Nurses, seeks to amplify their voices on pivotal issues impacting the profession. The platform focuses on advocacy, education, workplace conditions, leadership, research, and global collaboration. Consequently, it aims to support professional development and ensure well-being, fostering innovation to prepare the next generations of nurses for impactful careers in healthcare.

A Platform for Influence and Growth

The alliance is designed to enable students and early career nurses to contribute significantly to ICN policy on critical subjects such as education, climate change, and making nursing an attractive career option. The ICN aims to foster a united and robust nursing community by enhancing its influence within national nursing associations. Dr. Pamela Cipriano, ICN president, described the alliance as a “bold move” that reflects the organisation’s commitment to nurturing future generations of nurses. Moreover, she emphasised its potential to revolutionise and unite the international field of nursing.

Enhancing Communication and Leadership

A major goal of the alliance is to establish a new communication channel that bridges the gap between novice nurses and their more experienced counterparts. Dr. Cipriano emphasised that this initiative will improve ICN’s intelligence by encouraging knowledge sharing and mentorship. This effort will pave the way for a new generation of nurses, ready to tackle the challenges faced by the global workforce.

ICN Structural and Operational Plans

National nursing associations will nominate individual nurses to represent them in the alliance, with each representative serving a two-year term. Additionally, a steering committee comprising peer-elected representatives from each of the World Health Organization’s regions will guide the alliance, supported by ICN’s nursing and health policy team. The alliance is set to become operational early next year, with its first in-person meeting scheduled for June 2025 at the ICN Congress in Helsinki, Finland.
